The band played at the Reading Festival in 1977 and also opened for Muddy Waters at his major London concert. SALT features Stevie Smith (Ruthless Blues) on vocals and harp with the original Killing Floor members Mick Clarke (guitar) and Stuart McDonald (bass). The band has recently played new dates with Chris Sharley (drums) and continues to tour. Mick and Stuart played regularly at the Blues Attic in the 60s with Killing Floor. Both SALT and The Mick Clarke Band subsequently played many dates in Banbury at the Football Club. www.marshalamp.com/salt or www.mickclarke.com HONEYBOY HICKLING & the DTs Although Honeyboy never appeared at the Blues Attic he has been a favourite with the Banbury blues crowd for many years and has appeared at various venues in the town. For over three decades Honeyboy has fronted the DTs on vocals and harmonica. Three years of touring and recording with Steve Marriot, backing Carey Bell when he toured the UK together with recording with Bo Diddley and Paul Rodgers means he knows his trade. Just listen to his CDs Blue It and Straight from the Harp as it shows not only can he do the standards but write songs of his own as well. www.honeyboyhickling.com |
The Millers Bar line upWASHBOARD BILL’S JUG STOMPERS Three old members of the Colin James Blues Band met up a couple of years ago when two of them were playing in a Jug band and the other one went to watch. The outcome was that they decided to play a few gigs together each year. They do a mixture of skiffle, blues and folk tunes in keeping with the tradition of the old Jug bands, who did not just play blues but a wide selection of music genre. There line up is Bill Plester (jug, washboard and vocals). Jim Plester (guitar, kazoo and vocals) Colin Sykes (harmonica and vocals). www.myspace.com/washboardjugstompers GORDON SMITH & ALAN GLEN Gordon appeared at the Blues Attic on October 24th 1968. He was described by John Peel as “the foremost white blues guitarist in the world”. He made his first album in 1968 for Blue Horizon and it featured members of Fleetwood Mac, including Peter Green and the late Duster Bennett. In the 70s he was a member of The Kevin Coyne Band with whom he recorded several albums. In the 90s he recorded a solo country blues album ‘Out of the Bottleneck and he has recently recorded The Essential Gordon Smith with a group of other musicians and one of them was Alan Glen. Alan has played with the Yardbirds, Little Axe, Nine Below Zero, Barcodes and The Incredible Blues Puppies. He plays guitar and harmonica and will be joining Gordon on harmonica. www.thebarcodes.co.uk HOKUM HOTSHOTS Jim Murray and Pete Mason met in the late 60s and have been playing together on and off ever since. Between them they play a multitude of stringed instruments including National slide and Hawaiian guitars, Beltona tricone, mandolin, mandola, ukulele, acoustic 6 stringed guitars and tiple (no its not them asking for a drink, I understand it’s a 10 stringed S American instrument). Also they occasionally throw in a washboard, expect great musicianship and northern humour. Just as a point of interest the word Hokum when used in connection with blues music refers to songs of a frivolous and sexually suggestive nature, you have been warned. www.hokumhotshots.co.uk/ LEE BATES & BILLY NEWTON Lee on guitar and Billy on harmonica, a duo with a wealth of experience at festivals and venues all over the UK and Europe, as they proved at last years Banbury Blues Festival. Steeped in the tradition of the late great Sonny Terry & Brownie Mcgee they also devise songs of their own making by following the folk/blues tradition of adapting traditional songs. Guitarist Lee, excels on slide and ragtime blues with Billy whooping and wailing alongside him, add to that the northern humour and if last year was anything to go by we are in for a good night. www.freeweb.com/lee&billy THE LAST GASP SPASM BAND Expect a riotous end to the night when The Hokum Hotshots, Lee Bates and Billy Newton join together with a friend of theirs called ‘FRUIT-LIPS’ WATSON (playing jug), to form The Last Gasp Spasm Band. Old time jug band music with a no holds barred approach, stomp your feet, clap your hands, or if you are a bit more reserved just jangle your jewellery, but enjoy yourself. www.myspace.com/lastgaspband |
